The weather outside is frightful, but that doesn’t stop Miss Bingley from dragging her sister off to a trendy new flower shop in a slightly less than modish part of London. What could be so important as to bring two socialites out in the cold? Why, Mr. Darcy is coming for Christmas dinner.

Unfortunately for Miss Bingley, a winter storm and her own arrogance combine to ruin her Christmas plans, but maybe the Christmas she ends up having will actually turn into the Christmas of her dreams.

This Pride and Prejudice Variation Christmas short story is approximately 8,000 words.

Renata McMann and Summer Hanford began writing Pride and Prejudice Variations together in 2014 and have since become immersed in the amazing world Jane Austen created. Whether you’re a fan of Darcy and Elizabeth specifically or of clean Regency Romance in general, you will enjoy both McMann’s ability to imagine variations of this classic love story and Hanford’s skill in turning these variations of Mr. Darcy, Elizabeth Bennet and their enduring love into entertaining stories.

What a wonderdul novella. I simply adored it. I didn’t think I would like reading about Caroline Bingley and her hopes and aspirations for the perfect Christmas Dinner. However, I was delightfully wrong. Oh, this was so cute.

Caroline and Louisa had gone into the flower district to pick out the prefect flowers for their Christmas Celebration dinner. The Darcy’s would be there and, for Caroline, anything less than perfection was unacceptable.

As they returned home, an accident occurred in front of them between two wagons. Their poor coachman pulled up in time to avoid being involved in the accident. The wagon behind them also pulled up short, causing a problem with his load. Thus, boxing their carriage in between two accidents. It was our modern version of a multi-vehicle pileup and the resulting traffic jam.

The ladies were cold and the temperature was dropping. Not being in the most fashionable part of town was bad enough but to freeze was worse. They decided to walk as it couldn’t be that far… could it? As they walked together, the temperature continued to drop, a carriage splashed nasty water on them, and it began to snow. To make matters worse, Caroline missed out on a few of the directions and they soon became terribly lost. But, who to the rescue do we see? A carriage with eight tiny… no, wrong story. It was a carriage with Miss Bennet, Miss Elizabeth Bennet and Mrs. Gardiner. Could things get any worse for Caroline? Yeah, it did when Mrs. Gardiner insisted on taking Louisa and Caroline to their home which was nearby. Caroline, with no other option, needed to get Louise warm and dry immediately. She was in a delicate condition and was becoming pale and weak.

This was a most delightful turn of events that we don’t usually see in JAFF variations with Caroline. I think we have seen just about every side of her that is possible within the human condition. This Caroline was completely different as we experience her POV throughout the story.

Oh, my goodness. Maybe it’s the Christmas season or the emotions of the holidays that touched me so deeply as I read this. Some of the conversations were of those that had left them and we felt the sting of their loss during this time of the year. Maybe it was the war going on between the persona of Caroline vs Miss Bingley. Our authors expertly brought forth the struggle within Caroline as she warred with what she thought she wanted out of life. She looked around her and saw things through new eyes or perhaps a different perspective. This new lens gave her a new realization of where she had come from, where she was and where she wanted to be. It was very revealing and poignant.

I think my tongue will fall out of my mouth, but I must say this at least once... this was a delightful Caroline. Did I really say that? The authors did an excellent job of explaining the cracking of the ice around a heart we always thought was made of stone. Indeed, it was not. What a delightful reveal for Caroline. I loved the epilogue and I loved this variation.

Miss Bingley Christmas A Pride and Prejudice Variation edition by Renata McMann Summer Hanford Romance eBooks Reviews

I did not think I would enjoy this story because the main character was Caroline, but I was wrong. I did enjoy the overall story. For her to allow herself to enjoy Christmas made it delightful.
This was a really fun and quick holiday read that gives readers a chance to see a different and more likable Caroline Bingley. I enjoyed seeing this side of her and seeing this version of Caroline get her chance at a happy ending as well as all the interactions with the other characters. I look forward to reading more by these authors.
I think that I didn't like about this story is that it was so short. I would have liked it to develop more. Caroline is her snotty self thinking snotty thoughts though forced into a situation requiring her to behave nicely and then pretty suddenly she is being selfless and kind. A longer story could have developed that transformation better.

No sex, language or violence.
Caroline finds the Christmas spirit on Gracechurch Street but bores me to tears. I found this one to be just too short and Caroline to go from bitch to normal human to quickly.
I enjoy when minor characters from one of Jane Austen's novels gets their day in the sun and I don't even mind if it's one of the author's less liked characters. In this case, its Miss Caroline Bingley who gets her own special Christmas and chance at romance when the P&P story varies from the original just after Bingley, Darcy, the Hursts, and Caroline decamp to London after the Netherfield Ball.

I found the chance to follow along as Caroline Bingley narrates and muses her way through her own story was a heartwarming surprise. She is still Caroline, but she has a few startling revelations about herself, the people around her, worth, and love that lead to a sweet story that I was glad to have read.

P&P, Austenesque, and JAFF fans should definitely give this shorter, but well-developed piece a go.
I am just a pushover for a well written Xmas story. This is another quality Xmas tale by a pair of authors who write wonderful stories, short and long. And it certainly helps that I’ve read it on Xmas eve.

I find that much of the music I enjoy has been written by partners. Lennon and McCartney. Elton John and Bernie Taupin, the founders of the Eagles, etc. I think two talented partners can bring their strengths to an endeavor and a synergy that makes their work special. I thing the authors of this simple yet moving story have the same kind magic. Merry Xmas to them and thank you for your body of work.

I recommend this story highly.
Surprised by Miss Bingley's change of attitude in this story. Started out with the disagreeable Caroline Bingley and a sick Louisa Hurst. Rushing back to their townhouse after buying flowers of a perfect Christmas Eve dinner for the Darcys, the carriage is stuck between the wreckage of carts laden with goods. Not able to move forward nor backwards because of another cart upset, the sisters leave the cold carriage to walk the cold street towards home. Being lost, they are rescued by Jane Bennet in the Gardiners' carriage. Embarrassed further, Elizabeth and Mrs. Gardiner. Being in the respectful home of the Bennet family, having to settle for one of Elizabeth's dress, and having to spend the night since the weather has turned most foul, Caroline can hardly contain her derision. However, after meeting and greeting Mrs. Gardiner's brother, Mr. Taylor, Caroline's jealousy of Elizabeth and Darcy's attraction plus her brother's attraction to Jane Bennet seem to fade away into the night. Totally different Caroline from canon, but sweet Christmas story. Miracles do happen if only in this novella.
